Painting Tools Checklist

Complete painting tools and supplies checklist. Everything you need before starting your paint project.

Showing up to a paint job without the right tools is like trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner with a butter knife. Frustrating and messy. Here's what you need in the room before you open a single can.

Core Tools — The Non-Negotiables

  • Paint roller + frame (9-inch): The workhorse. Get a sturdy frame — cheap ones wobble and make a mess.
  • Roller covers (3/8" nap): Smooth walls. Use 1/2" nap for textured. Buy 2–3 because they wear out mid-job.
  • Angled sash brush (2–2.5"): For cutting in edges and painting trim. Nylon/polyester for latex paint, natural bristle for oil-based.
  • Paint tray + disposable liners: Liners turn cleanup from 20 minutes to 10 seconds.
  • Extension pole (4–8 ft): Keeps you off the ladder for most wall work. Threaded end fits standard roller frames.

Prep Supplies — Do Not Skip These

  • Painter's tape (FrogTape or ScotchBlue): 2 rolls minimum. Green for delicate surfaces, blue for general use.
  • Drop cloths: Canvas ($15, reusable) for floors. Plastic sheeting for furniture.
  • Spackle + putty knife (3"): Fill nail holes, dings, and cracks. Takes two minutes. Makes a huge difference.
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit): 120 for rough patches, 220 for a smooth final surface.
  • TSP or wall cleaner: Grease and grime on walls kill paint adhesion. Clean walls mean paint that actually sticks.
  • Caulk + caulk gun: Seal gaps between trim and walls. It's the difference between "DIY" and "who did you hire?"

Upgrades Worth the Extra Cash

  • Paint edger tool — faster than cutting in by hand once you get the hang of it.
  • Small foam roller (4-inch) — perfect for cabinet doors and tight spaces.
  • 5-in-1 painter's tool — opens cans, scrapes, spreads, cleans rollers. Best $8 you'll ever spend on painting.
  • Headlamp — lets you actually see what you're doing in corners and closets.
  • Paint can pour spout — three bucks and saves you from drips running down the side of the can.
